A night on Tarløysa - An unforgettable experience.

Hiking Tarløysa and enjoying the sunset views all evening was definitely one of my favorite acitivies I have ever done in Norway.

Tarløysa is a mountain 1086m over the sea level. Located between Molde and Åndalsnes, the hike is way less known and crowded then the famous Rampestreken, although it is way prettier in my opionion. From the parking lot, the mountain tip doesnt look to high or stunning, but that changes quickly on the way up. Once you make it up the steep incline over the boulders and reach the ridge, a stunning, crazy 360° view opens up and makes every meter up worth it. We did this hike on a sunny evening in june, and got to enjoy the sunset views almost so long that we had to force ourselfes to bed at some point, since at this latitude the sun already just barely disappears behind the horizon. And as if that is all not already crazy enough, there is a lovely made little hut on the top, where you can sleep for free. This hut was lovely made by volunteers living in the region, so please treat it with respect or dont even come up at all!

What to expect from the Tarløysa Hike in Vestland, Norway.

Hiking Tarløysa is a rather short but steep hike. Since the last part goes up trough a big field of boulders, it needs a sure foot. Personally, I would classify it as and an moderately difficult mountain trail (red, T3), but this information is not guaranteed. In summer, the hike can be done until late, since it is not getting really dark in the night, unless it's not cloudy. You can therefore check the day light phases easily in google ("Sunrise and sunset times in Ålesund"). The walk first starts on a grass track with moderate inclince, and then gets more intense with the actual climb of the mountain over the boulder field with a steeper incline. On the top a stunning 360° view opens up and there is also a little cabin which offers four sleeping possibilities. However, I recommend beeing prepared to walk down the same day or to bring a tent, in case you want to sleep up there and the cabin is already occupied

How to get there and where to park.

The last minutes on the way to the parking lot are on a private toll road. At the start of the road is a gate, where you have to pay with your card and get a receipt which you have to place visibly in your front screen. The road is quite steep in some parts, but we made it up with our camper Kini who is not the best with inclines. However, in winter snow chains may be required. The parking costs 110 Nok (2025). In the end of the road is a big parking area with sufficient space. The trail start right from there. This are the coordinates for the parking, just copy them into Google Maps: 62.65010, 7.53923

Sleeping on top of Tarløysa.

As everywhere in Norway/Scandinavia the Allemannsretten (Right of Everyone) allows you to access the nature and sleep in it. On the Tarløysa hike, you have two possibilities: Sleeping in the little hut on the top, if it's empty, or bringing your own tent. In case you want to tent up there, keep the wind conditions in mind, as there are not that many shelter options. The hut offers four sleeping possiblities, however, you can't rely on that it will be free.
